Automatic Emergency Braking to be Added to 5-Star Vehicle Rating System by 2018, NHTSA Announces

Within three years, newly manufactured vehicles will have to be equipped with an automatic emergency braking (AEB) system in order to be eligible to receive a 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), regulators recently announced.

This is reportedly part of the Administration's ongoing efforts to improve safety for drivers, prevent traffic accidents and save lives.

Background on AEB Systems

By 2018, the NHTSA's 5-Star Rating System will include requirements for AEB systems, a Denver car accident lawyer explains. Here's why that's important.

AEB systems are a form of crash avoidance technology that can evaluate when a collision may be imminent and, in these situations, apply the brakes. In general, these systems:

  • Rely on radar, cameras, sensors and/or driver inputs to determine when a crash may be about to happen
  • Come in two different forms:
    • Crash imminent braking (CIB), which comes into play when a rear-end collision may be about to occur and the driver has not yet taken action to try to avoid or prevent it
    • Dynamic brake support (DBS), which supports drivers' efforts to apply the brakes when needed to try to avoid a crash.

Shedding some light on this update to the 5-Star Rating System, U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx explained that:

We are adding automatic emergency braking features to the 5-Star Rating System because crash-avoidance technologies can save lives and should be widely accessible... AEB can substantially enhance safety, especially with the number of distracted drivers on the road.

Similarly, NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind stated that:

We're putting the brakes on rear-end crashes... Wherever possible, NHTSA will encourage and accelerate technological innovations that save lives.

Other Changes to the NHTSA's 5-Star Rating System

Adding the AEB requirement to the 5-Star Rating System is just one recent update made. As the NHTSA explains, it continues to update this Rating System as needed to "encourage the continuous advancement of vehicle safety" and "to provide more comprehensive information about vehicles to consumers to they can make more educated purchasing decisions."
