Deadly Crash Reveals Dangers of Drunk Driving, May Spur Wrongful Death Case

Deadly Crash May Spur Wrongful Death Case

A head-on collision that occurred just over a week ago in Franktown on Highway 83 has left two people dead - and another facing some serious criminal charges.According to the police report associated with this crash, the accident occurred on Sunday, Feb. 28th at around 1:30 pm when a 1997 green Honda Accord heading southbound on CO 83 crossed the median and hit a northbound 2014 maroon Harley Davidson and a 2016 gray Harley Davidson.

The victims on the 2014 Harley Davidson, neither of whom were wearing helmets, were reportedly thrown from their motorcycle upon impact, resulting in injuries that caused them to be pronounced dead at the scene. The other rider on the gray Harley reportedly only sustained minor injuries.

Upon arriving at the crash scene, the driver of the Honda, a 27-year-old woman from Parker, was arrested and booked into Douglas County Jail, where she was charged with:

  • Two counts of vehicular homicide
  • Third-degree assault
  • Driving while under the influence of alcohol (DUI) or drugs (DUID
  • Failure to present evidence of insurance.1

How Often Is Alcohol a Factor in Fatal Auto Accidents?

While fatal crashes like the one discussed above are certainly tragic, what may be just as harrowing is the fact that deadly impaired driving crashes - which are 100 percent preventable - happen all-too-often on U.S. roadways.

The following statistics2 shed some light on just how often alcohol and impaired driving contributes to deadly traffic collisions on U.S. roads:

  • More than 50% of all fatal highway crashes involving at least two vehicles involve alcohol impairment.
  • More than 65% of all fatal single-vehicle crashes are alcohol related.
  • More than 36% of all adult pedestrian accidents involve alcohol impairment.
  • About 80% of all fatal alcohol-related collisions occur between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.
  • Just over 35% of all adult pedestrian accidents involve an intoxicated pedestrian.
  • Each day, more than 300,000 drunk drivers are operating on U.S. roadways, but only about 3,200 are arrested.
  • In 2014, more than 1.1 million drivers across the U.S. were arrested for DUI or DUID.
  • About 1 in every 3 drivers arrested for or convicted of DUI are repeat offenders.
  • In 2014, three times as many males (than females) were arrested for DUI offenses.

After a Fatal Motorcycle Accident: Financial Recovery Options for Surviving Loved Ones

If your loved one has died in an auto accident that was caused by an impaired motorist, pursuing a wrongful death case can be the key to holding the negligent parties accountable while obtaining some sense of justice. While no amount of money can ever make up for the loss of a loved one, a wrongful death case can result in recoveries that may help families put their loved one to rest and deal with their grief without incurring additional financial stresses.

In fact, when successful, wrongful death cases can result in recoveries that include damages for (but not limited to):

  • Outstanding medical bills
  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Losses related to the decedent's future earning potential
  • Loss of consortium
  • Pain and suffering
