Nursing Homes Reflect Our Best & Worst

The decision to place a loved one in a nursing home is difficult whether it is brought on by age, illness, or both. It is never an easy decision to make, but people are often comforted by the thought that their loved one will be receiving top-notch care from compassionate nursing staff.

Unfortunately, that is not always the case.

Abusive behavior, including sexual abuse and physical neglect are all too common in nursing homes. In a recent case, we represented the surviving family members of a victim who died after contracting an infection through a bed sore. He developed the bed sores after being left in a bed with urine-soaked sheets. Tragically, this example is not a rarity; such horrors are on the rise throughout the United States.

Now, don't get the wrong idea: there are compassionate nursing staff who go the extra mile to protect the health and dignity of nursing home patients and assisted living residents. There are clean, well-organized facilities that make the wellbeing of patients and residents their utmost priority.

Nursing homes are capable of demonstrating humanity at its best and humanity at its worst. The best way to make sure your loved one is not harmed by the worst is to remain vigilant. Visit them often or call them when you're unable to make in-person visits. Most of all trust your gut. If it feels like something is wrong, it is important to investigate further or seek the assistance of an attorney who has experience with nursing home negligence cases.
